JackTrip and QJackCtl on the latest macOS 11 and 12 | Definitive guide?

I’m lost in the Jack rabbit hole: Jack, -Trip, -Pilot, -Router, QJackCtl v.??, for macOS 11 and will be upgrading to macOS 12, shortly. In addition, I can not keep track of what works and what is out-of-date among the plethora of open source projects . Does anyone have a definitive approach/guide for set-up (macOS 11)? For instance, are software, like Logic Pro and Max/MSP, no longer Jack-aware?

Don’t worry, it’s a steep learning curve especially when the documentation spans two decades. You have found your way to some good info here and with 15 years in, I will help you. We could even do a zoom at some point if you like. See below for short answers:

Jack, is the mixing interface that talks to the computer system audio and ‘hosts’ Jack -trip to send to and receive from the network JackTrip will run in without JACK

-Pilot,

basically does similar things as jack but not as much and don’t run both

-Router,

is deprecated and only available in windows it lets a daw run jack as a native app

QJackCtl v.??

is the navigation app for JACK comes in the jack pkg but is technically a separate app with a separate dev team

Jack-Router is what made apps ‘Jack-aware’. The JACK audio team stopped supporting Jack-Router for OSX, but it is still available for Windows during installation - check the box.

OSX users have migrated to Loopback or Blackhole for virtual routing from JACK/JackTrip to their DAW or other apps. Jan Stoltenberg made a video on it a while back on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2rUo70fxsY

A great resource to be sure! Please feel free to post your questions here and I’ll share what I know. Others could have input too. Like you could create a post for multiple people to contribute. I like to think about sharing in terms of adding to the continuum.
