LJS jam broadcasting event

2024-07-31T18:00:00Z
LJS is an online platform for learning jazz standards. Members are from all over the world.
Participants whose location is within about 800km from the Jacktrip server in Frankfort used for this session can expect a real-time experience like playing together in the same room.
The event is intended to demonstrate this experience and to encourage people to make music together online, regardless of their skill level. Mistakes are part of the concept. A stable rhythm section is provided with Band-in-a-Box which allows for arrangements on the fly as needed. Lead instruments are played by amateur musicians.
Between the tunes there will be explanations and Q&A.

I was intrigued that the majority of people were watching on YouTube. Is there anything that might scare them away from JackTrip? Is it maybe a bandwidth issue?

I saw 29 on Jacktrip and only 5 on YouTube. How many did you see on YT?

Difficult to say, as I cannot differentiate the views during the broadcast and those afterwards. What I noticed was, that on YT people showed up earlier and made lots of comments and during the session I saw only 3 or 4 people on JT

I was logged in on both Jacktrip and YT. When I looked at Jacktrip towards the end there were 29. And 5 on YT. So there were more on Jacktrip that I could see.

And it makes sense because Jacktrippers are already interested and your broadcast was featured on the JT website.

whereas YT is flooded with content and most people are not familiar with Jacktrips and they tend to look at what they are familiar with right?.

How many followers do you have on YT?
Could you do more promo on YT?
Or get featured on a YT influencer’s channel?

Regarding bandwidth concerns on Jacktrip are you referring to participation or observation? The should not be a bandwidth issue for observation because it is not using the Jacktrip app per se. It is using a web video protocol.

my YT channel used for this event is still rather new and has 48 subscribers.
I have not really thought about promoting it, as it serves more as a repository for content I refer to in my communication.
Getting featured by an influencer is something that I have not been very successful with. Any advice would be welcome.

watching on mobile devices in an area with poor wifi or mobile data coverage can suffer from interruptions while downloading. Does the JT web video protocol compare favorably with YT in this regard from the observer perspective?

If we are referring specifically to watching your broadcasts there is no need to install the Jacktrip app. People simply log in and go to your studio home page to watch. So it is just a website like YT not the Jacktrip app.

Yes, I know, but higher video quality for JT may take its toll on bandwidth. Or not?
But you are confirming what I suspected: people have to log in and, if they never have, that may scare them away.

looks like there were more than four times more people watching on
JackTrip. To increase numbers on YT, more promo there and elsewhere
might help. Good Luck Thomas!

Just to clarify:

  • There is no need for anyone to ever log in to view a live stream on JackTrip. No account required.
  • Live streams use standard web protocols and are supported by most browsers, including mobile devices. No software required.
  • JackTrip live streams can offer the highest quality available, including HD video and lossless audio. However, they will automatically adjust quality based on each viewer’s available bandwidth.

Great performance BTW! For those who missed it, you can watch the recording here.

Thank you Mike. Do viewers need the URL for the livestream or is there a public page where anyone can see what is currently livestreaming?

Currently, we feature all active public live streams on the home page for jacktrip.com.

We also feature “top recordings” that have received the most likes. It’s not ideal because it just drives more viewers towards the things that are already popular. We’re thinking through a few different ways to better highlight more recent recordings.

Of course, if you are logged in you get a few more ways to find recordings:

I am referring to the live broadcasts on the Jacktrip website versus livestreaming to YouTube or FB.

I also am referring to streaming on JackTrip, versus simulcasting to other platforms. We’re trying to phase out the “broadcast” terminology in favor of “live stream” since it’s more common.

Ah ok ok the studio activity is at the very bottom of the homepage. I never went that far down before. Thanks.
