Upcoming Free Tier Changes

Beginning November 1st 2025, paid subscriptions will be required to start managed JackTrip virtual studio sessions. Everyone will still be able to join active sessions free of charge. However, free tier members will no longer be able to start new sessions that we manage for you.

If you are currently hosting free virtual studio sessions, please consider the following options:

Option 1: Upgrade to a Paid Subscription

For a limited time through the end of 2025, you can get 20% off annual subscription plans by using the discount code ANNUAL25. That’s a year of unlimited sessions for as little as $39 (USD)!

Option 2: Invite Your Friends for Subscription Credits

Did you know that we automatically credit you $5 (USD) for each person who signs up for JackTrip using your studio invite link? It only takes 12 referrals a year for you to earn a free Lite subscription!

Option 3: Manage Your Own JackTrip Server

There will continue to be no charge to manage your own JackTrip Server. Audio-only servers that you manage yourself using JackTrip’s open source project will continue to be supported by our free service. Additionally, you can continue managing your own studio servers (which include video and other features) free of charge for up to 5 participants.

Although it requires a powerful Internet connection and strong IT skills, managing your own server is a great option for cost-sensitive musicians. The hardware requirements are minimal, and you can even do it using a Raspberry Pi!

Thank you @miked for this insightful transition. I think plenty of time has been given to the free tier model and the pricing is very reasonable. Requiring paid subs could help to clarify and strengthen the user community and focus on the most engaged of them.

Perhaps now and then a limited time promotional offer could allow those curious about it to create and start a studio at no cost. But that’s just an idea to support those who want to see what it is all about and then they may or may not want to buy a sub.

Hi Synthia, we plan to keep the 4 week free trial going for new members. Especially with month to month subscriptions, that gives plenty of time to try everything out.

Thanks for that clarification @miked.

Will new subs would be provided with a specific deadline date to cancel before getting charged?

@Synthia There is no obligation for the free trial. It starts automatically and we never even collect payment information unless someone explicitly chooses to upgrade.
